A Kansas man is likely Googling “cruel and unusual punishment” after being sentenced to six months of house arrest — for robbing a bank in order to get away from his wife and his house and into prison.

Lawrence John Ripple walked into a branch of the Bank of Labor and gave a note to a teller saying he had a gun and demanding money, but when a teller handed over a wad of cash, the 71-year-old simply walked over to the customer service area and sat down. He told a bank employee that he was just waiting for cops to arrive from their precinct, which was less than a block away.

Ripple said he was in a bad state of mind due to complications from heart surgery and apologized to the sentencing judge, who also ordered him to pay $227 in billable wages for the employees who couldn’t work during the robbery investigation.
